How being outdoors affects your skin
There are 6 main skin types and the elements treat each one differently. Long walks, early swims, layered SPF, cold air on the commute — it all adds up. The key is to choosing products that work with your skin type so it can handle the effects of the outdoors.
Skin barrier stress
Saltwater, trail dust — your skin barrier protects you, but repeated exposure can leave it feeling sensitive, reactive, and slower to recover.
Pore buildup
Sunscreen, pollution, sweat — not all of it rinses away with water alone. Over time, pores can feel congested and skin can look dull or uneven.
Dryness
Sun, wind, rain, saltwater — the elements pull moisture from your skin. By the time you’re home, skin can feel tight, stretched, and rough.
A 3-step process
- Wash your face with water and gently pat it dry with a towel
- Wait 30 minutes without applying any products
- Take a look in the mirror and notice how it feels compared to the scale below.
Oily
Looks shiny across most of the face — particularly the nose and forehead. More prone to congestion and breakouts.
Feels greasy to touch, is rarely dry.
Dry
Looks dry or flaky in patches.
Feels rough — you might find that flakes of skin fall off when touched.
Combination
Looks oilier through the T-zone (nose and forehead) but drier across the cheeks.
Feels dry in some places but oily to touch in others.
Normal
Looks balanced — neither dry nor oily. If nothing stands out, you most likely have this skin type.
Feels as it looks, even and consistent.
Mature and Sensitive skin
Everyone sits somewhere on the oiliness scale. Some skin also has additional characteristics that affect how it responds to your routine and the elements.
Mature
Collagen levels naturally decline with age, reducing skin elasticity. Fine lines become more visible and many notice more dryness — particularly later in life and post-menopause.
Sensitive
Quickly reactive to certain ingredients and environmental stress, causing redness, itching, or discomfort. Can be linked to conditions such as eczema or rosacea — choose products carefully and consider seeing a dermatologist.
A simple 2-step routine for every skin type
If you're new to skincare and want something low-fuss, this is a great place to start.
- Face wash: Suncream, salt, sweat, pollution — not all of it rinses away with water alone. Face Wash clears buildup from pores without stripping your natural barrier or leaving skin feeling tight.
- Face cream: Daily exposure to the weather draws moisture from your skin. A face cream formulated for your skin type helps replenish hydration, support your barrier, and manage oil balance.
